Do You Want to Sell Crafts?

Is it your dream to sell crafts and make a living doing what you love? If you said yes, here are a couple of resources to help you get started, and one to help you manage the business end of things later on.

In interests of full disclosure, I do not try to sell crafts personally. There's a reason for it.

go make art Go Make Art
Astarte's Mega-Zine for lovers of art and craft.

Published quarterly.
Many years ago, cooking was my hobby, my love and my creative outlet. I went to work as a professional cook. Eight years later, I hated cooking with a passion. To this day, my culinary attempts are limited to tossing something in the microwave. In my view, the best way to lose interest in your hobby is to make it your work.

That being said, not everybody's like me. So if you're still interested in selling your arts and crafts, please read on.

Resources to Help you Sell Crafts

I've reviewed a software application that manages the business of selling crafts, and also a couple of ebooks, one specifically for selling crafts and arts products, and the other focusing on making money from a hobby.

The software and both ebooks are for sale, not freebies. Unfortunately, that's one of the first things you'll learn if you want to set up your own business. You have to invest money before you can make money. On a positive note, anything you spend related to starting or running a business, including the cost of these items, is tax deductible.

Your craft supplies will be tax deductible too! Isn't that AWESOME?

#1 Ebook : How to Start Your Own Craft Business

This ebook is a good bet. The author gives you plenty of good information about the business end of getting set up to sell crafts. I know what you're thinking. "I'm an artist and a crafter. I want to create wonderful things and sell them. I don't want to bother learning boring business stuff."

If only it were that easy. Unfortunately, before you can sell crafts successfully, you first have to spend time and $$ figuring out your business plan, your marketing plans, bookkeeping, inventory control, and so forth. If you don't do this, you stand to lose your shirt. I know this because I started my own freelance writing business in 1996, and it's still successful. This ebook gets you off on the right foot. I recommend it.

#2 Ebook : Turn Your Hobby into Profits

This ebook has a more general focus, as it covers how to turn any hobby into profit. It's written by a guy, so both the tone and the language are male oriented. I'm assuming that most of the visitors to this page are members of the gentler sex. If that is the case, please understand that although the ebook is written by and for guys, the information in it is solid and will work equally well for those who want to sell crafts.

You'll also find the sales page is strongly hyped. The publisher obviously bought an Internet marketing course before he wrote the content for his site! LOL!

#3: Software: Crafting Software Business Management System

This software manages the business end of things. It allows you to track sales and orders, inventory, supplies, customers, invoices and more. Unless you LOVE paper work, let me assure you that you need something like this once you get started. This is probably not the first item you need to buy when you set out to sell crafts, but once you get off the ground, a software application like this will save you tons of admin time and keep your hair from going gray prematurely.

#4: Software: Site Build It (SBI) Web Site

Finally, if you want to promote yourself on the web, or sell crafts from your web site, you might consider a SBI site. This web site that you are visiting is a SBI product.

However, SBI is more than just a way of making a web site. Lots of products do that. SBI is called "business in a box" because it helps you not only create the site, but shows you how to make it search engine friendly and how to "monitize" it -- meaning it shows you various ways to make money from your site.

I monitize this site from advertising and affiliate sales -- which means the site is a tax deductible business expense. Even better, a portion of my craft supplies and craft magazines are tax deductible too. You see where this is going....?
